What is the Death Meditation Experience (DME)?

In some spiritual practices, meditators visualize their own death in detail, with the intention of making peace with the inevitable.

Meditating on your death may support the following:

  • Recognition of your priorities, values, and who and what truly matters to you.
  • Meeting your hidden fears and anxieties face-to-face so that you can integrate them.
  • Excavating what is buried deep in your psyche.
  • Awakening a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation.
  • Gaining clarity and insight into your life and how you want to use your time here on this planet.

DME is an immersive journey that is inspired by such practices.

What happens during an in-person DME?

1. You take a few moments to connect to your heart and set your intentions.

2. You wear headphones, lay down inside the coffin, and tell us when you feel ready.

3. We will only close the door once you're ready. Then, you can close your eyes, relax and receive.

4. You will be guided by a 3D-effect sound journey through different stages.

5. At some point, you will hear incomplete sentences. Allow your heart to complete them. Pay attention to the answers that pop up. Trust the answers.

6. The journey ends with gentle music, it's time to come out of the coffin.

7. Journal. It helps to write as soon as possible so that you don’t forget your findings. Write down the names, places, thoughts, fears and desires that came up during the journey.

FAQ

What is the duration of the journey?

Preparation: 7-10 minutes

Inside the coffin: 6 minutes

Aftercare and journaling: 7-10 minutes

Total: 20-30 minutes

What about safety?

The coffin’s lid is light and easy to push open. You can get out and remove the headphones at any point you want. Inside the coffin there is comfortable cushioning and air ventilation. You should be fine as long as you do not pressure yourself to do anything you don’t feel ready for.

Recognize and protect your boundaries. Do not stay inside a millisecond longer than you want.

What happens if emotions come up?

Allow them, welcome them, feel them, express them, love them, let your tears fall and allow your body to shake and release. Feel free to make strange sounds.

Wouldn’t this trigger my anxieties and fears?

The anxieties and fears are likely already there, buried deep in your subconscious mind, unconsciously influencing your life. DME may very well trigger them, which means that it may bring them to the surface so that you can meet them and begin to make peace with them. Don't do DME if you're not ready for this.

What do I do if a fear comes up but I still want to continue the journey?

Welcome fear as a natural and useful part of existence, speak with it, see if it has something to tell you, breathe slowly and deeply, allow your body to shake, and speak comforting words to yourself. Be there for yourself, and ask your body what it needs from you.

How can I make use of my findings after the journey?

Turn your insights into action points with a specific date and time (when applicable). For example, if you realized that there's someone you want to apologize to, set a reminder on your phone or add it to your calendar. Don't let DME be just another forgotten fun ride. Allow it to work its magic in your life.
